Waterfront

Ontario’s landscapes are home to an amazing wildlife and because of their visceral beauty I express my adoration through this mural. The land here in Mississauga is the home to local animals such as raccoons, seagulls, bass fish, coyotes and even deer. These creatures are representations of our different communities in Toronto existing together in this space. With the current global pandemic, the world at large has noticed a resurgence in the wildlife. People are taking notice of their local animals roaming more often as an uplifting and curious sign for the future. I aim to provide the public an alluring reminder of the natural environment we occupy and coexist with, and to reflect our own unique groups that we belong to. In this time of uncertainty and social isolation our need for a connection to nature, to ourselves, to our families and to our communities is highlighted. Everything else continues on as people stay home, and this is an awe-inspiring sight. These local animals are symbols of the GTA and the communities that we create here. One, such as the Lakeview Village’s new waterfront development in Mississauga, where people are free to gather and coexist by Lake Ontario.

Nigel Westgate

  • A contemporary emerging artist from Toronto, Canada with a specialization in spray-painted murals. They have an BFA in Painting and Drawing from OCAD University where they studied anatomy for artists, life drawing, abstract painting and the Italian renaissance. This artist’s practice ultimately utilizes murals to express himself, yet they also work with wood carving, found objects, canvases, and drawings. Primarily painting faces, animals, letters and abstractions as the core structure to create dynamic compositions and colourful murals. “A wall completely changes an area around it with paint, by abstracting shapes, letter forms and faces that inspire people with an alluring creativity embedded in their city.” They are passionate about bringing energy into their work, and painting real life through lenses of metaphor, emphasis and a goal to spark curiosity and creativity in the everyday viewer. The artist is himself inspired by their childhood and his obsession with murals since they were very young “I remember seeing walls as a kid and just being completely absorbed by the image.” It is that inquisition, astonishment, joy, and narrative that they aim to achieve in their work to affect someone else in the same way.
