This design is representing a garden of flowers and birds, and inspired by Iranian spiral carpet designs, Eslimi. Popular in the Middle East area, I hope this pattern reflects the cultural demography in Mississauga and nurtures a sense of belonging in the community. This mural also expresses the beauty of nature, joy and support during difficult times.

This workshop invites you into our mystical 'Clearing Spaces' process, including a guided meditation, creating a collaborative elemental painting and participating in a live performance by The Broadbent Sisters. For over 12 years, meditative drawing and painting has been the foundation of our art practice. Using the colour blue, and an intuitive process, we work together, to create large-scale mystical landscapes. Meditative drawing, similar to doodling is quiet, and connects the body and mind. The repetitive action of the brush stroke allows us to enter into a meditative state. The blue paint is the colour of water, representing energies of peace and power. We begin the session with a guided meditation, inviting everyone to slow down and connect. Using blue tones, we will work together to create a mystical landscape to reconnect us to the element of water. Throughout the workshop, participants will physically switch spots to allow for collaboration and appreciation of everyone’s unique mark-making. The space will be carefully designed so that people feel safe and connected, fuelling the opportunity for deeper, more meaningful conversations. The final piece will be hung in the space for the public to enjoy. This mystical and meditative painting workshop calms the mind, and allows us to be more present for ourselves and others. This type of collaboration, leads to magical connections and a meaningful art piece. The final part of the experience will be participating in a live performance. There is always alchemy in live performance as the relationship between form and formless unfolds for both artist and witness. We believe our performance clears different spaces, expectations, and old stories. This is a blessing for the reclaimed waterfront, transforming it into a vital space of connection. 


Clearing Spaces - A Meditative Retreat & Workshop

My mural explores the theme of slowness, of taking time to enjoy the small, quiet moments leading up to a desired outcome. A girl lies in a flower bed, reading a book while a caterpillar climbs up her leg; plants grow around her, waiting to bud. On the sides of the main frame, a series of images depict a flower coming to bloom, indicators of growth, alluding to the passing of time. During these times of physical distancing, I want to remind people of the opportunity we have to nurture and care for ourselves and to appreciate the life that continues to grow around and within us.

The inspiration for this mural is the feeling I experience whenever I’m in nature which is being part of everything, realizing how a tree or a flower is not different from me because we are all part of the earth. Connecting with nature is about us listening, appreciating and respecting the natural areas we live in, by being more friendly with the earth and every species. I believe it will help us be happier humans. The fox, a spirit animal, invites us to be guided by our wisdom and intuition and listen to our hearts during unprecedented times. Let’s apply this teaching to our lives now more than ever when our world needs it the most, let’s be guided by our hearts which hold the truth of our existence, love, and connection.

Connecting with Nature

A poetic narrative that describes Indigenous life along the waterfront and how the verb based languages of the various stewards of the treaty area, called A Dish With One Spoon, were influenced by Mother Nature and the names were adopted by the GTA. With the backdrop of 1 million sunflowers, it is hard to not think of positivity and possibility. Hope, new life, growth — all things we need in our lives, now, more than ever. “Embrace Your Daydream” is the message I think the world needs to hear right now. It is a message of hope and perseverance. It’s for the dreamers and the do-ers, with a combination of whimsy and ambition. The vision for my mural is a combination of organic lettering, echoing the life radiating from the sunflowers, coupled with geometric shapes, to signify the progression of the Village space coming to life beyond the wall. From afar, the sunflower field flows into the mural with a matched colour pallet of yellows, greens and blues. The geometric shapes are reminiscent of the sunflowers themselves, bringing innovation and nature together.

Embrace Your Daydreams

This project will be an extension of my previous investigations into the living entity of the water in our lakes and rivers. Previously, my work has explored the northern lakes like Superior and Huron. Moving south, this project will capture the personality of lake Ontario so that viewers may come to see that lake in a transformative way. No longer is it simply a body of water that we use as a consumed resource. The photographs will delve deep into the varied colours of the water and how the lake displays its emotions and personality. The work will combine indigenous ways of knowing with those of western understanding. In this work, the goal is to create a unified experience of our environment that allows all perspectives to enrich our lives. I visited the shores of Lake Ontario around the new development and captured a variety of images of the lake. I visited various sites on several different occasions to capture the lake and capture the lake's emotions it wished to share. 

Each lake has its own way of communicating and sharing. Colours, waves, the underwater environment will definitely be different than previous lakes photographed.

They say the antidote to negative thinking is creative doing – which is precisely why these four words have become my life’s motto. I believe this small and simple statement serves as a powerful reminder for people to be mindful of their waste consumption / production. More importantly, this mural aims to encourage creativity by sending a message to the members of our community to explore various forms of self expression and simply CREATE MORE.

As an abstract artist who organically creates artwork that is vibrant, lively, energetic and colourful. I aspire to create an incredibly dynamic backdrop that will elevate and inspire the Lakeview community.

My art practice is multi-disciplinary, but revolves around a central goal: to produce work that is well crafted, visually appealing, and meaningful.

My murals play with patterning, painted as if successive layers of wallpaper have been removed from a wall, casually revealing the contrasting elements that lay beneath. Pattern, in the form of repeating decorative motifs, is a ubiquitous form of human expression. Many designs are so distinct they instantly call to mind a particular culture or region. Others repeat over and over again throughout history, lacking a specific starting point. They hint at early trade routes and the ways in which cultures have mixed and mingled for millennia.

By showcasing a multiplicity of motifs from around the world, my layered murals represent the diverse intersection of cultures that make up contemporary cities.

The motifs that are revealed in my layered paintings are from a broad range of eras and cultures. I source them by researching the neighborhood in which the mural will be installed, both by learning its history and by simply walking its streets. Each mural is intended as an allegory for a particular time and place, one that speaks not only to who has passed through and who is here now, but also who might come in the future. In the tremendously diverse reality of a contemporary globalized world, my paintings are a commentary on the fact that we are all in this together: collaborating, teaching, learning from, and inspiring one another.

Conceptual Direction
For this particular project I will source my collage materials via Golden Age of
Botanical Art, from Biodiversity Heritage Library. I want to create a piece where humans can connect harmoniously with the environment, titled:
“Le Jardin de Tous,” Everyone’s Garden.

“Le Jardin de Tous,” will be a harmonious green biome. A space evoking the
spirit of Lakeview Village:
-Playful colours created by the patterns of leaves, and petals
-Abstract folds representing gentle river flows
-Fauna and flora biome life in Ontario

Keeping in mind this is a sales centre and community hub for activations and
programming, art and educational exhibitions, food, cultural and music
experiences. “Le Jardin de Tous,” will incorporate hints of Ontario’s floral and
fauna life. Such as the feathers from Barn Owls, bulb of Culver’s Root, Milkweed seeds, Arrowheads and so much more mixed together to make new botanics. Our viewers will have to look, think: “I SPY” books from Scholastic and getting lost in the green for a moment or two.

This piece has different types of flora and animals “gathering” for a community hub made for human gatherings as a busy ecosystem.

We are in the middle of a global crisis, COVID-19, racism, systematic oppression and inequality at a global scale.

As a black woman, I am in pain. My community has been treated for centuries- as if our bodies were disposable objects.

In the age of information, ignorance is a choice and we can no longer allow the ignorance and injustices to continue. Enough is enough.

Black and brown bodies matter. Our lives, our minds, our mental health matters. In silent protest, this mural is a plea for equality, justice, to stand against violence and denounce racism, paying homage to those who have lost their lives to racial violence.

As with all my work, I aim to create a powerful, hopeful, vibrant work that caters to the mental health of all people, especially people of colour. Here is to celebrating being unapologetically black, to living your truth and loving yourself, and to being our ancestors’ wildest dreams.

The work aims to transform this space into a much needed space of mental reset and healing for everyone.

Colour is healing… and we need it right now more than ever.

The Age of Illumination

Marveling at plants and small creatures is a childhood fascination that continues to inspire my artwork today. My mural Pollinator Playground is meant to convey this sense of joy and wonder: giant plants dominate the horizon in a storybook landscape and the air is filled with enlarged pollinating species; life-sized people cohabitate this fantasy garden, inviting visitors to see their place amongst the plants and pollinators. If they so choose, guests can pose with a pollinator or giant mural plant, mimicking the poses or just standing alongside the silhouettes.  Not all pollinating species can be included and neither can all the diversity of human identities. Still, an effort has been made to represent variety in plant, animal, and human experience: different cultures, ages, and ability have been considered. In this way, the hope is that a wide range of people will see themselves reflected against different types of pollinators and plants. I believe this speaks to an important message: pollinating species are valuable yet threatened. By working together, however, humans can choose to play an active role in helping pollinating species thrive; they can move from appreciation towards action to support these vulnerable species.

In the foreground there are four Sunflowers and four Indigenous sisters representing 4  Anishinaabe Kwe Water Principles : Pray to the Water, Sing to the Water, Carry the Water and Listen to the Water. Anishinaabe Kwe (Ojibway, Chippewas, Odawa, Potawatomi women & 2 spirit) have taken on the duty of protecting the water and use these 4 principles when we advocate for environmental protection and dismantling dirty energy generation. We sing to thank the water for sustaining life, we listen to the water to assess where environmental protection is needed, we carry the water to understand the importance of water to all life, and we pray to the water to give it strength to support life & to cleanse itself. 

I am not claiming any indigenous involvement nor support for the dismantling and subsequent reclamation of the Lakeview Generation Plant lands; I am only sharing my personal message in a place I feel will be accepting of it. Miigwetch.

Reconnecting to the water with sunflowers

One of the most important messages the world needs to hear and feel right now is that of hope. Portraying hope, as rays of light reach out over a field of flowers, the community in isolation but working together in faith that this will be overcome. Using metaphors from nature, representing the community as flowers and essential workers as pollinators going about their vital work in their own little bubbles. They distance but stay connected for the benefit of the community, reminding us how delicate but at the same time how resilient they are (like flowers and bees). As light reaches the individual bubbles, they burst freeing the creatures inside, portraying the time when we can come out of isolation. The earth is represented by Mother Nature who continues to give rise to pollinators and flowers. I purposely chose a black woman to represent Mother Nature, as Africa is known as the Cradle of Civilization, I feel more images of black people represented in a positive light must be made more visible and of course due to the current situation where if I stay silent, I too am guilty.

I wanted to show who our previous Indigenous Nations of the area are in this land acknowledgment, to show the symbol of earth to its core and it’s connection to the nations, land and water. You will also see the Turtle symbolizing the creation story of mother earth and the tree of peace with its roots to bring us all together in union. Thank you to the Anishinabek, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat,  Metis, Ojibway-Chippewa and our Mississaugas of the Credit.

Over the past decade, the focus of my photography and video practice has been on exploring the relationship between humans and water—and our psychological, physiological, and spiritual connections to it. My fascination with water comes from an early memory of almost drowning. Ever since, I have been mesmerized by water’s strength and changeable characteristics. Rather than fear it, I revere it as a sacred and powerful gift guiding me through life, always reassuring me of my journey. My early experience instilled a bond and respect for nature. Growing up I explored Ontario Lakes by swimming and canoeing and a great portion of my life has been spent in the water. The intriguing qualities of water helped feed my exploration as a visual artist by studying its movement, rhythm, vastness of the ocean, and its ability to hold and to reflect light. My work examines both the surface of water and what’s beneath it through video, animation, and long exposure photography, which I use to exaggerate movement to resemble painterly brush strokes and textures to provoke viewers to see lakes in a transformative way. In my work, lakes, oceans and rivers are not bodies of water intended for human consumption; rather, they are thriving elemental life forces. 

Here and Now, is a digital mural which combines still photography with animation. The animations merge the soft and heavy textures of Lake Ontario, subtly moving in a range of blues and white tones, cascading on the screen, mimicking the movements of calm water. My intent is to draw the viewer inward for a visceral experience, and to provoke a re-examination of our relationship to Lake Ontario. Bringing water into urban spaces reminds us that we all have a fundamental need to connect with water, and the closer we are to it, the more committed we will be to preserving and protecting it. 

Here and Now

By referencing transgenerational trauma (through divorce, immigration, war, class divide), building of identity, dealing with contrasting sociocultural norms, I find relatable entry into other common histories in the likes of a qualitative researcher- collecting stories as data- and interpret this into autoethnographic works. These interests were born from the efforts to understand ‘Han’, a Korean word describing “shared suffering” since the divide, and also for someone who carries grief or a longing.

When researching into the site of Lakeview, I was confronted with two histories: the Lakeview Generating Station and the four smokestacks nicknamed ‘Four Sisters’, and the women who worked to support the men at war, during WWII, in the nearby Small Arms Inspection Building. The mural is an attempt at reminding the Mississauga community, and informing visitors, of these stories to look into our past for strength as we continue to build into the future.

Finding community while living in an urban environment is key to a healthy lifestyle. Something that I truly believe brings people together is vibrant, positive, public art. I aim to bring a message of positivity to this space, next to the lovely Sunflower Fields, through the use of colours and movement, which can also be found in the wonderful natural world that we all live in.

&ldquo;In partnership with Artscape and Lakeview Centre I am honoured to be one of the Artists in Residence for 2023. My warmest gratitude to Artscape and Lakeview for their support. During my residency I will be offering two in-person workshops at Lakeview Centre and one virtual workshop.&rdquo;
The Wiigwaas (Birch Bark) series combines traditional Indigenous ways of knowing along with a creative experience that will provide practical knowledge along with an artist interpretation of working with natural materials.&nbsp;
In the first workshop participants will paint and create a basket based on an ages old design. While paper and other natural materials will be utilized, this knowledge can be used in real life. The workshop will focus on working with water colour paints to create a still life composition along with basket making skills. Participants do not require any prior arts skills. Comfort with hand sewing would be an asset. Natural materials such as animal hide and Sweetgrass will also be used. Sweetgrass is one of the four medicines that woodlands Indigenous people use. This plant has a distinct vanilla essence and those who are scent sensitive may want to consider this when signing up for this workshop.&nbsp;
In the second workshop participants will create a contemporary birch bark pin. Seed beads along with other natural materials such as sweet grass will be utilized. Sweetgrass is one of the four medicines that woodlands Indigenous people use. This plant has a distinct vanilla essence and those who are scent sensitive or have allergies to trees and their bark may want to consider this when signing up for this workshop. The workshop will focus on working with seed beads and birch bark to create a wearable one of a kind art piece. Participants do not require any prior skills, however comfort with hand sewing and working with seed beads would be an asset.
Traditional knowledge and teachings will be part of the learning experience as we celebrate the gift of Wiigwaas (birch bark). Chi miigwetch.

The idea of environmental succession is the central focus of this installation as it relates to the idea of change and evolution within an existing ecosystem. In nature, when a tree falls and sunlight hits the forest floor, new life begins to grow out of the decomposition, slowly changing over time. The evolution of the Lakeview Village site, from industrial lands to what will be a thriving, sustainable lakefront community thematically relates to the idea of succession and growth. As visitors walk underneath the installation, they will feel as though they are witnessing a changing natural environment. The time it takes them to walk along the entirety of the art piece will also be symbolic of the importance of time in both natural succession, and in the time it takes to physically and socially build a new community. The more time that passes, the more diverse, strong and interesting it becomes. As well, the complex ecosystems and native flora and mosses present in the many trail networks and conservation lands in Mississauga are represented in the piece through the plant palette selection, bringing the experience of being immersed in nature inside the Discovery Center.

Ontario’s landscapes are home to an amazing wildlife and because of their visceral beauty I express my adoration through this mural. The land here in Mississauga is the home to local animals such as raccoons, seagulls, bass fish, coyotes and even deer. These creatures are representations of our different communities in Toronto existing together in this space.

With the current global pandemic, the world at large has noticed a resurgence in the wildlife. People are taking notice of their local animals roaming more often as an uplifting and curious sign for the future. I aim to provide the public an alluring reminder of the natural environment we occupy and coexist with, and to reflect our own unique groups that we belong to.

In this time of uncertainty and social isolation our need for a connection to nature, to ourselves, to our families and to our communities is highlighted. Everything else continues on as people stay home, and this is an awe-inspiring sight. These local animals are symbols of the GTA and the communities that we create here. One, such as the Lakeview Village’s new waterfront development in Mississauga, where people are free to gather and coexist by Lake Ontario.

This two-part foundational workshop teaches the basics of finger weaving alongside the history of the M&eacute;tis Voyageurs. The art of finger weaving originated among the First Nations people in the Eastern Woodlands of Turtle Island (Canada). As trade began, nations began trading for wool with the French and the finger woven belts became more colourful and elaborate. As the trade grew and expanded, the voyageurs of the fur trade adopted the use of these belts as well. Many voyageurs took wives from First Nation communities, the descendants of these unions formed a distinct culture, language and community - and so the M&eacute;tis were born of the fur trade. As generations passed, these finger woven sash&rsquo;s became a part of the M&eacute;tis nation. To this day the sash, and the art of finger weaving, has become an integral part of our M&eacute;tis culture and one of our proudest traditions.
The morning part of this workshop we will learn the foundation of finger weaving and the history behind it and how it relates to M&eacute;tis culture and identity today. After a traditional lunch, we will paint decorative paddles together and learn about the history of the voyageurs and reflect on the urbanization of waterfront along the Great Lakes and the impact it has on communities of past and present.&nbsp;

The mural concept is to create an abstracted timeline that incorporates the history and iconography that represents and honours native Mississauga. The mural begins with a green abstracted forest to show the landscape of the area, and transitions to water – flowing across the hoarding and forming into a river. The momentum of the flowing water represents our desire to reconnect with our natural environment. The mural explores humanity’s connection to large bodies of water and the calming effect we feel when we are near them. In almost every culture, water is deeply connected to life; the timeline represents the long journey to reconnect people to Mississauga’s waterfront. The mural features an eagle soaring across the water and acts as a reconnection to the land and water, inspired by one of the native translations of Mississauga: “the eagle clan”. The eagle is a predominant totem and is viewed as a great messenger. In the mural, the eagle is a messenger, soaring across time and reconnecting us to leadership and ideas on the protection of land and water.

It’s not the end of the world, it’s the beginning of the new world and WE are in charge.

In the spirit of manifestation, I’m approaching the concept from a place of optimism and hope for a better future. In a way we have been abruptly welcomed to our homes now that we must stay in indefinitely, and also when we can move freely again, people will walk and bike by the mural and it will welcome them into our new world.

During our social timeout in this post Covid era, the arts will play a major role in setting the tone and healing the masses in/for the future. I wish to welcome everyone home to this new world by writing WELCOME HOME in my colourful and spirit lifting geometry.

My work is a journey to the unknown. Where nature and control meets. Going into something I don’t understand. The abstract art I create I find healing, rejuvenation and fulfillment of self. I am influenced by the movement of nature, calligraphy,graffiti and ancient designs such as baybayin, Paisley, sacred geometry. I love to blend realism into my work because a lot of people don’t like abstract due to not being able to not understand so this helps me connect with that realm of people as well. I use both aerosol and paint brush to freestyle create my murals. Lots of layering of creating and destroying until I’m content about the masterpiece. What also makes the mural Beautiful is the community around the peace while I’m creating it.

Something unique shines off in the distance. Nestled deep within a field of blooming sunflowers this sculpture stands 15&rsquo; tall twisting towards the sky in a dance of gravity defying curves. Carefully crafted groves in the column shine the light that pulses from deep within the sculpture. Self powered by the array of solar panels stylized into gigantic wire frame leaves. Light pulsed through 3 polished grooves that spiral up the column reacting as the environment changes.

The Light Within

Combining elements of Lakeview Village & Niña, the artwork contains lots of local
flowers, plants, water, and the representative buildings of the site. Niña depicts the community of people of the Lakeview, so she is hanging out, hiding, chilling, playing, and exploring the lake forest.

As Lakeview Village is the hub of innovation, sustainability, and culture in the
waterfront, I wanted to exaggerate the elements of nature as big as the buildings, as if the border disappears between the man-made and the natural creations on Earth. The interactive element is an important part of my work, so by placing Niñas in 10 different spots, the viewers can pause, observe, and find pleasant surprises. Whether you do the seek & find game alone or together, you will feel connected to the artwork and imagine yourself in the village!
The challenge to this project was the animation of the artwork. I had limited ability to do complex animations, and as I wanted to add a natural movement to the flowers and whimsical gestures to the Niñas, I partnered up with an animator to bring the scene to life.

I hope Niña's Lake Forest brings joy to the Discovery Centre, and anyone who pauses to find Niñas.

This collaborative mural and diorama art celebrates the connection of Serson Creek to Lake Ontario. Together, we envision the welcoming of migratory birds and flourishing wildlife as we take part in the ecosystem by the lake. 
I hope this artwork will allow people to take a moment to observe and explore how we thrive through our connections to the land, water, and sky. The revitalization of Serson Creek will be our hope and the heart of the Lakeview Village, celebrating the interconnection of humans and nature. 


Us, Wildlife, and Water

Inspired by the amplified interaction of lakeside elements such as wind, water, and light, Composition for Wind explores the multifaceted relationship between humans and the natural world integrating themes of connection, collaboration, and transformation. The hypnotically shifting form of this mechanical cloud draws the gaze upward and inward, capturing the imagination and offering a moment for reflection and contemplation. Similar in nature to the artist-based hoarding initiative launched in 2020, this sculpture allows the community to again connect with art, the site and its relationship to the waterfront.
