Reconnecting to the water with sunflowers

A pale blue silhouette of the Lakeview Power Generating Station ( 4 Sisters) in the background showing the past where the dirty energy generation cut people off from communing with the beautiful lakefront. In the foreground there are four Sunflowers and four Indigenous sisters representing 4 Anishinaabe Kwe Water Principles : Pray to the Water, Sing to the Water, Carry the Water and Listen to the Water. Anishinaabe Kwe (Ojibway, Chippewas, Odawa, Potawatomi women & 2 spirit) have taken on the duty of protecting the water and use these 4 principles when we advocate for environmental protection and dismantling dirty energy generation. We sing to thank the water for sustaining life, we listen to the water to assess where environmental protection is needed, we carry the water to understand the importance of water to all life, and we pray to the water to give it strength to support life & to cleanse itself. I am not claiming any indigenous involvement nor support for the dismantling and subsequent reclamation of the Lakeview Generation Plant lands; I am only sharing my personal message in a place I feel will be accepting of it. Keitha Keeshig-Tobias Biizindam

  • My name is Keitha Keeshig-Tobias Biizindam (She who listens and learns and uses what she hears) I am a very versatile modern artist based in Toronto with a home/studio/retail space. I come from the Delaware Nation at Moraviantown, Anishnaabe from Neyaashiinigamiing Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation and grew up in Toronto. I am a Contemporary Indigenous Artist specializing in Dipped Pen & Ink, bringing forth complex issues and inspiration with beauty and grace. I am inspired by the connect of spirit between us and nature of indigenous way of life, the images/icons/emblems of indigenous culture, and depicting my emotions relating to family/ history/current affair, pen & ink fairy tale illustrations, the female form & nature motifs of art nouveau and art deco. My favourite medium is dipped pen and ink, especially blue ink: blue like at twilight a time of transition, blue like the water which is women’s privilege to cherish and protect. I am known for my blue dipped pen & ink drawings which incorporate science, history, current affairs, empathy, and gracefulness with beautiful female figures in my unique style I call N8V (native) Nouveau.
